President Joe Biden has decided not to seek re-election for a second term. On Sunday, via X, formerly known as Twitter, President Biden posted this letter to his more than 35 million followers.

“ It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intentions to seek reelection. I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term”

While the decision wasn't entirely unexpected among political circles, it has nonetheless stirred conversations within the Democratic Party. At 81, Biden becomes one of the oldest presidents in U.S. history .

Minutes after his decision, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his preferred successor and the next Democratic nominee for president. Vice President Harris, who made history as the first woman, first Black American, and first South Asian American Vice President, has been a steadfast partner to President Biden throughout his term.

“My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for

Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.” (via X)

The path to the White House is still uncertain as we move forward. Although it was inevitable for Joe Biden to step aside, this could potentially open the door for others to challenge Vice President Harris for the Democratic party's nomination.
